What it's like to be an intern at SACARE?

Hi there loyal SACARE readers! My name is Adriana and I am one of the many interns who have had the amazing opportunity to work with SACARE. For this week's blog entry, I have the pleasure of telling you about my time and experiences during the duration of my internship.

In this blog post, I will be answering a few questions about my internship experience with SACARE.

How to you come by this internship?

Earlier this year, I was in my final semester of my Bachelor of Marketing and Communicationsat the University of South Australia and needed a new location to complete my internship for one of my final subjects. The initial location of my internship was unable to host me anymore due to unforeseen reasons and I needed to find a new location as soon as possible. I remembered my friend Saif had completed their internship at SACARE and is currently employed with them so I decided to reach out and see if I could come in for a meeting and potentially organise an internship. Fortunately for me, I was given the all clear by both SACARE and the university to undertake my marketing internship with them.

What did you have the opportunity to do?

As part of the universities internship requirements, I was required to produce a marketing plan for the SACARE. In order to complete this, I was required to do a lot of research into the disability care sector and SACARE’s future marketing goals. As this was not an industry I was familiar with prior to my internship, I learnt a lot about how important support care workers are and all the tasks how much work goes into effectively managing a business within this industry.

I was also very fortunate top be able to visit The Gums supported independent living home and help with the international women’s day lunch that was organised tobe held there. I got to know some of the support workers, occupational therapists and even some of the wonderful clients who came out and joined us for lunch that day.

On my last day of my internship, I was also given the opportunity to present my key findings from my marketing plan based on the marketing goals that were given to me at the start of my internship. It was an incredible opportunity to give a real work place presentation.

What was the biggest challenge of your internship?

The biggest challenge was completing the majority of my internship from home. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were all required to work from home for a while. This included my internship as well. Despite this being a big challenge, I never felt that I was left out or missed any important aspects from my internship experience.

What was your favourite part of your internship?

My favourite part of my internship would definitely have to be the people and the dogs in the office. I absolutely loved working with Milly, Chloe and other members of the SACARE staff, but I absolutely loved having the dogs in the office as well.

What was your biggest takeaway from your time at SACARE?

The culture of SACARE is by far the biggest takeaway. If I have learnt anything from my time at SACARE, it is that a strong and loving workplace culture is one of the most important things at the office. You can see that the culture of SACARE is a part of every decision they make, every staff member and it is in everything that they do and that stay for. The SACARE quote that I can most identify with and will keep with me always is, ‘if it’s not fun don’t come’. At SACARE, you can see this resonates with every staff member as they all love what they do and I can say with absolute confidence that I loved every moment of my time with SACARE and would definitely recommend an internship with them.
