The Gums: SACARE's Brand New World-class Facility Explained

As you may have noticed, we are opening a brand new state-of the art facility at Salisbury in the next coming months. “The Gums” will be a world-class facility for Supported Independent Living and Transitional Services, of the utmost quality in all aspects.

The Gums is sacare’s newest property for people who need high quality healthcare, injury recovery and transitional services over the short, medium or long term – The Gums sets a new standard in care for people living with disability.

Offering stunning accommodation and multi-disciplinary therapy delivered by our skilled team of allied health professionals, The Gums enables our clients to live their best life.

Our focus at The Gums is to help our clients progress and thrive, in a caring and compassionate environment.

The Gums includes 8 rooms dedicated to clients with high or complex care needs, and an additional 12 rooms for transitional clients with low to moderate care needs. These transitional rooms consist of 3, 2-person share rooms and 6 single rooms.

Purpose-built, the property is set within a beautiful sensory garden and equipped with state-of-the-art technologies. It is located in Salisbury, right beside the Para River, within walking distance to recreational and medical facilities.

Who are The Gums Clients?

The Gums is uniquely designed for people who need high-care and transitional services, helping them to progress to the next stage of their life.

Our clients at The Gums have wide-ranging injuries and conditions. These may include, but are not limited to;

Low-Dependency Clients

  • People with early-onset Huntington’s Disease
  • Lower level spinal cord injuries (paraplegia), less complex neurological injuries i.e. ABI requiring supervision for ADL’s
  • Autism spectrum disorder
  • People with early stage progressive neuromuscular disease or dementia

  • High-Dependency Clients
    • Severe neurological conditions i.e. high level spinal cord injury (SCI), stroke (CVA) and acquired brain injury (ABI)
    • Muscular Dystrophies
    • Complex amputations
    • Clients with feeding tubes, respirators, complex seating and pressure care requirements
    • Complex co-morbidities i.e. wounds (stable) and orthopaedic injuries

    The Gums accommodates those who require various levels of care, others have needs that are highly dependent and complex, including people with respirators, feeding tubes, complex amputations and Muscular Dystrophies. Alongside this, we are also the only organization that utilises the Ventilator Dependency Model.
    Our aim at The Gums is to see our clients transition to the next stage of their life, which may be returning to work, living independently or more functional personal goals.

    What kinds of services will be offered?

    At The Gums, our team integrates high-quality personal support and care services with multi-disciplinary, progressive therapies to provide our clients with the very best opportunities to achieve their goals.
    In addition to the core support enjoyed by all of our clients at The Gums, we provide the full suite of allied health services including occupational therapy, physiotherapy, psychology, speech pathology, exercise physiology and dietician services.

    All of our clients have access to our outstanding THRIVE Program, an evidence-based program aimed at increasing positive emotion through therapies.

    We also offer access to hydrotherapy and gym facilities, therapy-based community access, and high-level individual care for clients with specific needs including those who are ventilated, require ceiling hoists and have unique and complex behaviours. 

     

    Why is SACARE different to other disability facilities?

    A progressive approach to therapy. SACARE will integrate existing support models with multi-disciplinary therapy, to provide transitional opportunities for clients.

    Our priority is to provide our clients at The Gums with the very best opportunities to progress to the next stage in their life, and this will vary for everyone.

    We know that many will need continued support following their stay, so we ensure that all of our clients are provided with the services and care they need to continue their recovery away from The Gums.

    Regardless of whether a client stays at The Gums for a short or long period of time, we provide the following range of services to ensure you are supported following your stay:
